TATTOO POLICIES AND FAQ

These policies are the boundaries within which Hinterland operates to promote safety for clients and artists.  It is expected that all clients will read these policies prior to their visit. Please also consider checking out our FAQ below!

If you are looking to get tattooed with us, we use a proposal form method! Design proposals may be submitted via the submission form only when it is open for a booking cycle. Forms open every 2-3 months in congruence with each artists’ availability.  DMs about booking will go unanswered on artist social platforms.  Inquiry emails are not likely to get a response while an artists’ books are CLOSED.

If your design has been selected, your artist will contact you with instructions for paying your non-refundable deposit.  Once your deposit is received, you will receive a scheduling link to choose your date and start time.  You can expect to hear from us again within the week of your appointment.

New for 2022:

Due to the volume of submissions, we are no longer able to respond to every submission we receive - though we DO read every single one.  If your design has been accepted, you will be contacted within ten days of submitting.  If you do not hear from us within that time, your design has not been selected.  You are more than welcome to submit again when the forms reopen. We ask that you do not email or message with inquiries about your submission.

Expect a design draft from your artist 24-48 hours prior to your appointment date.  You may review the work, ask for adjustments if needed, and ask your artist any questions you may have about your appointment at that time.  Once you have approved your design, you will receive your final confirmation details and pricing estimate via email.

A non-refundable deposit is required for all appointments.  This deposit secures your appointment date and tattoo design.  Deposit amounts correlate to the size and complexity of your tattoo, and will be deducted from your final cost as long as your appointment is kept.

A deposit will be void/lost if:

-You do not arrive to your scheduled appointment.

-You cancel or reschedule with less than 48 hours’ notice

-After you reschedule or cancel 2 times.

-You change your tattoo design concept after booking.

Deposits usually vary from $50-$100 depending on design/your artists’ discretion.  For larger, multi-session tattoo projects, a minimum of a $200 non-refundable deposit is required to book.  This will be deducted at your final appointment.

Deposits can be paid via cash or Venmo (payment instructions will be included in an email from your artist.)  The balance of your tattoo cost is expected in either cash or card.  Cash is always preferred.

Artist rates may vary, please visit our Artist Pages for updates on their pricing.

Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule for any reason.  If you are able to give us this notice, your deposit will still carry over to your rescheduled date.  No-shows, cancellations, or last minute reschedules will result in a loss of your deposit.  We know life happens, but please communicate with us as soon as you are able so we can do our best to accommodate your needs and ours!

Please come to your appointment well fed, hydrated, and rested.  Drinking the night before a tattoo is not advised.  You will need your ID (You MUST be 18 years or older to be tattooed in New York), proof of vaccination, and you are welcome to bring any comfort items along with you: I.e sensory aids, headphones, music, water, snacks….etc.  Come in comfortable clothing that suits your tattoo placement and sets you up to sit still comfortably for the duration of your session.

At this time guests are not preferred in our studio space due to covid and to Hinterland’s intimate occupancy space.  However, if you should need an interpreter, translator, or really feel strongly about having a moral support person along with you - please email us and let us know.  In these cases, one guest is allowed on the condition that they are fully vaccinated and masked during their visit.

For safety and liability purposes, children are not permitted in the studio.

Touch-ups are not uncommon, as tattoo pigment is foreign to the body.  Even if your artist performs beautifully and you ace your aftercare - the body still keeps the score.  If your tattoo needs a touch up, please don’t hesitate to email your artist directly and be sure to include a photo of the piece.  This allows us to know how much time to block off for your touch-up appointment.  Touch-ups are free within a year of the original tattoo as long as it’s clear the tattoo hasn’t been carelessly treated post-appointment.

If you have a piece of work by one of us that you’re hoping to add on to, please use the submission form method.  If you are a multi-session client and need to schedule your next appointment, email us directly.

Masks are still required for all of our visitors at this time.

We now require proof of vaccination from our guests.

This could be in the form of a vaccination card, a passport, or a screen shot of a medical record that contains your name and vaccination status.

We understand that this resource hasn’t been made accessible - nor is it feasible - for everyone, however, as your service providers working in close proximity to body fluids, this is our shop’s policy in order to protect our artists and our client community.  Artists will be fully masked during all procedures, our daily sanitation protocols are vigilantly up-kept, and our shop has a running air filter to help minimize the spread of airborne pathogens.

If you have experienced a positive exposure, or suspect you are positive for covid yourself - please contact us as soon as possible to reschedule your appointment.  With enough notice, your deposit will still be honored at your rescheduled appointment time.

If you have concerns related to this policy, you are welcome to email us at hinterlandroc@gmail.com.

We reserve the right to refuse service to clients who we feel are unsafe for a tattoo procedure.  This includes clients who are pregnant, under the influence, those who may not be medically approved by a doctor, or those who are under age.

We may also refuse service to individuals who make us feel physically unsafe or sexually threatened, those who use racial slurs, and/or engage in ableist/transphobic/fatphobic/misogynist behavior.

Hinterland values respect, healthy boundaries, body autonomy, trauma-informed, and justice-centered tattoo practices.  If any artist or client experiences behaviors that do not align with these values, this will be considered a violation of shop policy and the individual responsible will not be welcomed back as a client.
