Tattoo Policies

Booking takes place via artist submission forms only when they are open for a booking cycle. Forms open every 2-3 months with each artists’ availability.

Off-cycle emails and social media DMs about booking will go unanswered. See more FAQs on the booking page.

A non-refundable deposit is required for all appointments.  The deposit will be deducted from your final cost as long as your appointment is kept.

A deposit will be void/lost if:

-You do not arrive to your scheduled appointment

-You cancel or reschedule with less than 48 hours’ notice

-After you reschedule or cancel 2 times

-You change your tattoo design concept after booking

Deposits are $75-$100 depending on tattoo size and complexity, and artists’ discretion.  For larger, multi-session projects, a minimum $200 non-refundable deposit is required to book.  This will be deducted from the total cost of your tattoo at the final appointment.

Deposits may be made via cash or Venmo. The balance of your tattoo must be paid at your appointment via cash or card, cash is preferred.

Artist rates may vary, please visit our Artists page for more information.

Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule for any reason.

If you are able to give us this notice, your deposit will still carry over to your rescheduled date.  No-shows, cancellations, or last minute reschedules will result in a loss of your deposit.  We know life happens, but please communicate with us as soon as you are able so we can do our best to accommodate your needs and ours!

Please come to your appointment fed, hydrated, and rested.  Drinking alcohol the night before a tattoo is not advised.  Come in comfortable clothing that suits your tattoo placement and sets you up to sit still comfortably for the duration of your session.

You must bring your ID (You MUST be 18 years or older to be tattooed in New York), and be prepared to provide proof of vaccination. You are welcome to bring any comfort items along with you: I.e sensory aids, headphones, music, water, snacks….etc.

If you have additional accessibility needs that you would like to share, please contact your artist after booking. We are happy to discuss any accommodations we can make to help your experience be as welcoming as possible.

At this time, you may bring one guest along with you to your appointment.  This policy may vary depending on transmission rates of Covid-19. Masks are still required of guests in the parlor.

For safety and liability purposes, children are not permitted in the studio.

If your tattoo request is for a custom design - not a freehand collaboration or pre-drawn flash piece - you can expect to receive an unshaded design draft preview from your artist prior to your appointment.  Artist design times may vary, but typically these previews should arrive 24-48hrs ahead of your session.

Please wear a mask while visiting Hinterland, especially when in a group, while other groups are present, and if feeling unwell. Masks are required for tattoo appointments.

Masking and other COVID-19 prevention practices create more accessible spaces for those who are vulnerable to serious illness, such as immunocompromised folks. We value the access, inclusion, & wellbeing of all of our community members. Thank you for joining us in this effort.

Visitors to Hinterland are expected to adhere to our community agreements.

Generally, our agreements ask that visitors (including tattoo clients and event attendees) act with kindness and respect towards all artists, staff, and other guests. Visitors, artists, and staff are expected to be inclusive and welcoming towards people of all identities, genders, races and ethnicities, abilities, and body types. Staff are available as resources for visitors struggling with maintaining welcoming behavior.

We reserve the right to refuse service to clients who we feel are unsafe for a tattoo procedure.  This includes clients who are pregnant, under the influence, those who may not be medically approved by a doctor, or those who are under age.

We may also refuse service to individuals who make us feel physically unsafe or sexually threatened, those who use racial slurs, and/or engage in ableist/transphobic/fatphobic/misogynist behavior.

Hinterland values respect, healthy boundaries, body autonomy, trauma-informed, and justice-centered tattoo practices.  If any artist or client experiences behaviors that do not align with these values, this will be considered a violation of shop policy and the individual responsible will not be welcomed back in the future.

Client Rights

We use an informed consent model for tattooing, ensuring that you have all the information you need to make decisions about your body. We gratefully follow the guidance of Tamara Santibañez and K. Lenore Siner in their co-authored Client Bill of Rights. This document outlines the rights and treatment a client should be able to expect during any tattoo experience.
