Imagined meeting more creatives and being part of a community that inspired you to make things.
Craved more creative practice, play, and feeling alive, and less scrolling, screen-staring, and soul-sucking whatever.
Found yourself in a slump, wishing for a dose of magic, synchronicity, and fun surprises.

And then, once upon a summer week, you joined us at Hinterland and we all finally did the thing.

In the Moon Garden is a five-night retreat—four workshops plus an evening of festivities—with illustrator, creative entrepreneur & tattoo artist Hayden Welch, and writer, artist, & teacher June Gervais, and the Hinterland crew.

Join us for the whole five-night story (yes, there is a story arc!), or choose the workshops and events that fit your week.

Each three-hour workshop also comes with a three-hour daytime access pass to the Hinterland studio space within the week, where we provide art supplies, stations, and prompts, inviting you to reconnect with your creative practice however you like.

Workshops will include:

Opening meditation/storytelling and music
Guided writing and art-making in a magical atmosphere
Teaching and creative exercises led by tattoo artist Hayden Welch and writer June Gervais, with special guest artists from the Hinterland Crew

Low-pressure hang time with other friendly, creative people

Our week of retreat culminates in a Moon Garden Party on Saturday Evening, July 25th from 6-9pm.

We’ll be sharing a juicy midsummer arts-harvest from a week of creative gardening with our community.

Chapter 1: Welcome to the Moon Garden & Creating Your Personal Field Guide

What’s your creative wish? To begin or complete a project; find community; start a daily writing or art practice? In this workshop, you'll clarify your intentions and take the first steps toward bringing them into being. Enjoy the hum of being among creative people in a tattoo studio/art house where new ideas come into being every day.

Tonight's magic will also include: Creating your own handmade journal (field guide) that you’ll use for the rest of the week and beyond, in a bookbinding workshop with Shawnee Hill.

Wednesday, July 22

Chapter 2: Amending Soil & Creative Composting

What do you need—or need to clear away—to create a steady creative practice, find your creative community, or bring your project idea into being? Tonight you’ll map the garden plot of your life with fresh eyes and make it a place where your art/writing can grow abundantly.

Wednesday's magic will also include: A treasure swap in which you (literally) let go of a few artifacts weighing you down in order to receive something delightful, surprising, and new. Found poetry and collage building with oracle and tarot decks led by Hayden and Tiff, of A Little Off Balance.

Thursday, July 23

Chapter 3: The Tool Shed & Seed Sharing

Our contemporary lives (so much distraction! digital everything!) often crowd out real solitude and real community. For the artist/writer/creator, though, these two practices are often the main power-ups for inspiration, ideas, and the resources to make them happen. Tonight, we get back to the ancient basics.

Thursday's magic will also include: A series of fun and powerful writing prompts led by June Gervais. (You will surprise yourself.) A community built cache of idea and resource sharing - magic to reach for when your well feels dry.

Friday, July 24

Chapter 4: Practical Magic (Crafting a Creative Practice that Works)

Trellises give moonflowers the space to climb and thrive. How can you build a creative practice that gives your ideas the support and space to come into being? How will you adapt through dry spells, sudden hurricanes, or big-ass, leaf-munching bugs? Tonight you'll craft a weather-resilient plan for your art/writing/big ideas (along with a Plan B and Q and maybe even Z).

Friday's magic will also include: Hayden and June sharing every hack they have learned/invented in their 20+ years as working artists, to keep their creative practices alive and restart when stuck or stalled. Also: Create a customized potion bottle as a tangible reminder of your plans.
